Top Ten Business Schools in India

In this article the writer describes about the top ten business schools in India.chillibreeze writerJagrit Sachdeva

India as a country and as an economy has come a long way since independence. Times have changed and the country is now being looked at as one of the most resourceful entities by some of the most powerful countries of the world. The biggest threat of population, instead of working to the detriment of the country, is proving to be fruitful in a way. Foreign investors are pouring in money generously, and they have a reason to do so. The economy is vibrant and being a part of it is an asset. Much of this has been possible because of the new educated generation, many of which hold graduate and postgraduate degrees.

When one talks about business and post graduation, the obvious connection is an MBA, and the first name, which comes to mind, is obviously the IIMs. There are six IIMs across in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Kozhikode, Lucknow, and Indore. These schools are considered the most prestigious among all the far flung business schools of India. Over a hundred and fifty thousand candidates from all over the country take the qualifying examination every year and just over one thousand and two hundred get through. Besides these schools there are some other prominent schools like ISB (Indian School of Business), XLRI (Xavier Labour Research Institute), FMS (Faculty of Management Studies), MDI (Management Development Institute), IIFT (Indian Institute of Foreign Trade), and IRMA (Institute of Rural Management).

1. Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM Ahmedabad): IIM Ahmedabad is ranked the best business school of India and top business school of Asia. It offers four programmes in Management. The PGP - Post Graduate Program, which is equivalent to MBA, the FPM - Fellowship Program in Management, the FDP - Faculty Development Program, and the MDP - Management Development Program - a programme for middle and top level managers. Admission process for PGP and FPM involves taking the Common Admission Test (CAT) followed by group discussions and interviews for short-listed candidates.

2. Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM C): IIM C is another top business school, offering three full time programs, namely the PGDM- Post Graduate Diploma in Management that is equivalent to an MBA, the FPM, and the PGDCM-Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Aided Management. The selection in any of these programmes is only through CAT.

3. Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM B): IIM Bangalore offers PGP, which is equivalent to an MBA, and the FPM. Selection in both these programmes is only through CAT.

4. Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (IIM L): IIM Lucknow offers a full time PGP - Post Graduate Program in Management and a full time FPM program. Both these programs require candidates to take the CAT.

All the above-mentioned business schools are the best in the country for a master’s degree in business administration or equivalent to an MBA. The placement in all of them is hundred percent, with the top salary with a foreign company touching a whopping 1,90,000 US dollars a year, whereas the top domestic salary is in the vicinity of 50,000 dollars. Besides these schools’ conventional MBA programs, there are schools that offer MBAs in different areas like IRMA offering a MBA degree in rural management, IIFT offering a degree in foreign trade, and XLRI specializing in human resources. These schools are undoubtedly the best and the most respected in their own domains of MBA programmes.

5. Xavier Labour Research Institute (XLRI) Jamshedpur: XLRI was established way back in 1949. The institute offers two programmes. A Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration and a Post Graduate Diploma in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations. The institute is certainly the most respected among the ones offering a specialization in human resources.

6. Indian School of Business (ISB) Hyderabad: ISB is one of the few schools that offer a one-year course. The institute has some of the finest academicians in the world.

7. Faculty of Management Studies (FMS): FMS is under the University of Delhi. The programme started in 1967 and has had a top placement record since then. FMS is ranked numero uno among all the universities offering MBA courses. It’s fees may not be as high as the other institutes, but this does not mean compromising on quality.

8. Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT): IIFT commands the number one position among institutes that offer foreign trade in an MBA. It is located in New Delhi and is one of the top institutes of India under the Ministry of Commerce.

9. Management Development Institute (MDI): MDI is ranked in the top five institutes of the country. An interesting non-MBA related fact is that it has the largest golf course among the various B-schools. MDI focuses on human resources as well as other streams.

10. Institute of Rural Management (IRMA): IRMA is located in Gujarat. It was founded in 1979 at the initiative of National Dairy Development Board in collaboration with the Government of India, Government of Gujarat, and Swiss Development Co-operation. IRMA is the most respected institute among those interested in working with or promoting rural organizations.
